NewsModernizing our Social Safety Net

Our current social safety net is overly complex, slow, and hasn’t kept up with the changing ways that Canadians live and work today.

On Employment Insurance (EI) for example, many people, especially Millennials and Gen Z have never had a job that allows them to collect it. They may work multiple jobs on contract, work a seasonal job, or are self-employed.

As our economy continues to face uncertainties, from floods, wildfires, and hurricanes, to tariffs and economic threats from south of the border, we must immediately reimagine our systems to meet this moment.

Karina is committed to modernizing our social safety system for the 21st century, instead of one based on the realities from 30 years ago. She envisions a system that is fair and effective, that meets people where they are, and can actually help people get back on their feet and into their next job and career.

If Karina Gould is elected Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Karina would prioritize reforming the system within one year to create a system that:

  • Reduces paperwork for applicants
  • Gets people liveable supports quickly and effectively
  • Increases support for seniors
  • Provides a more dignified existence to people living with disabilities
  • Opens a path to establishing a Basic Income

Karina wants to build a system that doesn’t just catch people when they have been knocked down, but one that allows them to bounce back even higher.
